Ole Miss running back Matt Jones announced intention to enter Transfer Portal
Ole Miss Rebels running back Matt Jones announced that he plans to enter the Transfer Portal on social media.
Matt Jones spent four seasons at Ole Miss. During that time, he played in 23 games and had 59 carries for 308 yards and six touchdowns. That’s 5.2 yards per attempt. He also has four receptions for 12 yards in his playing career. On top of that, Jones has returned kicks on occasion.
“Dear Rebel Nation,” Matt Jones wrote. “Thank you for all you have done for me and my family these past 4 years! Words cannot describe how thankful I am to have been a part of this community and program. To Coach [Kevin] Smith and Coach [Lane] Kiffin, thank you for your guidance and providing me with this opportunity. I will finish the season strong with my brothers.”
“With that being said, I will be entering the Transfer Portal as a grad transfer with 1 year of eligibility remaining! Thank you and Hotty Toddy forever! Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not evil, to give you a future and hope.”
Jones played his high school football at Jackson Prep in Mississippi and was a member of the Class of 2021 where he was not a ranked recruit. He initially joined Ole Miss as a non-scholarship player.

Ole Miss just missed out on the College Football Playoff in 2024, going 9-3 overall and 5-3 in SEC play. In the end, however, the Rebels finished 14th in the College Football Playoff rankings and on the outside of the bracket. Instead, Ole Miss will be headed to the Gator Bowl against Duke.
In his goodbye letter to Ole Miss, Jones mentioned, “I will finish the season strong with my brothers.” That implies he’ll stick with Ole Miss through the Gator Bowl.
Ole Miss and the Transfer Portal
The Transfer Portal opened on December 9th. This is one of two Transfer Portal windows that is going to be open in the offseason for players to move to a new school. The other window comes following Spring practice.
In the case of Ole Miss, the Rebels have become known for being active in the Transfer Portal under Lane Kiffin. This season appears to be no different. Ole Miss currently has the second-ranked class in the On3 2025 College Football Team Transfer Portal Rankings. It’s a class that currently has 10 players who have left the program and another nine who have already decided to transfer into it. That comes with plenty of time to add more players.
