There was no shortage of social media reaction to the trash-throwing episode at Neyland Stadium on Saturday night, but Ole Miss used their Twitter account to fire off a particularly funny joke aimed at Tennessee.
On Saturday night, the Rebels posted the following tweet:
The football team’s official account continued to tweet about the game on Sunday, sharing photos of a sad Tennessee mascot and a popular meme onto which they added head coach Lane Kiffin with the caption “Voluntears.”
Kiffin was the head coach at Tennessee in 2009. Unsurprisingly, Kiffin retweeted the Mr. Potato Head tweet along with plenty of other fodder about the situation.
Tennessee fans throw trash, pelt Lane Kiffin
The embarrassing debacle began when Tennessee fans did not like the spot of the ball following a failed 4th-and-24 conversion attempt. The referees spotted receiver Jacob Warren less than a yard short of the first down, and in protest of the call, chaos ensued from Vols fans.
Trash was thrown onto the field, primarily from the student section, some of which was aimed at the Ole Miss sideline. Kiffin, who made his return to Neyland Stadium as a head coach for the first time, seemed to be hit with a golf ball in the tirade, which was caught on the ESPN broadcast.

Tennessee cheerleaders were escorted to the locker room to avoid injury, and the Volunteers’ marching band soon followed suit. Ole Miss players, including Kiffin, vacated the bench and took to the playing field, where they were out of the stands’ range. A game delay lasted for roughly 20 minutes, and officials issued a forfeit warning before play finally resumed.
Ole Miss left Knoxville with a 31-26 win and improved to 5-1 on the season. Kiffin also made a hysterical grab after a fan threw a water bottle at him as he left the field.
Statements from athletic director Danny White, chancellor Donde Plowman and SEC commissioner Greg Sankey ensued. Several arrests have been made, and UTPD continues to comb through video footage to hold those involved accountable.
