Ole Miss defeated LSU 55-49 in an SEC shootout Saturday night that saw Rebels fans rush the field after the exciting victory.

It’s coming at a cost, though, as the SEC has announced a $100,000 fine toward Ole Miss for the occurrence. But after that shootout, who blames them?

The two teams put up a combined 1,343 total yards on offense while both quarterbacks, Jayden Daniels and Jaxson Dart, threw for 414 and 389 yards each, respectively, along with eight combined touchdowns. If that wasn’t enough, both teams amassed at least 220 yards on the ground in what turned out to be one of the most exciting games on the Week 5 slate.

Winning the matchup for Ole Miss firmly inserts the Rebels back in the SEC West mix after losing to Alabama 24-10 during Week 4. An 0-2 start to conference play would have been disastrous for the Rebels’ efforts down the stretch but Lane Kiffin’s squad was able to prevail and avoid disaster.

For LSU, they drop to 3-2 but thankfully for the Tigers, this is their first loss in conference play. In the standings, they’re one spot in front of the Rebels thanks to having one more game of conference action under their belt and sit at 2-1 instead of Ole Miss’ 1-1.

Still, Ole Miss fans were too busy celebrating the victory at the moment than worrying about specific standings and rankings.

This obviously isn’t the first time Ole Miss fans have stormed the field after a victory — and certainly won’t be the last. One of the more memorable times this happened was back in 2014 when the Rebels took down then-No. 3 Alabama at home. Fans stormed the field and a piece of the goalpost ended up in a fan’s apartment after the fact.

None of that ended up happening — as far as we know — from this fan-storming, but it was certainly warranted after the offensive firework display they were treated to. And to win in the final minute like the Rebels did only solidified the fan’s decision.

Ole Miss remains insider Vaught-Hemingway Stadium for Week 6’s matchup against Arkansas. No storming of the field is expected with a victory — but a 5-1 start to the season would feel just as good.

Kickoff between the Rebels and Razorbacks is set for Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. ET live on the SEC Network as Ole Miss looks to secure its second win over an SEC West opponent this season.
