Tim Elko is now just one home run away from being the greatest Ole Miss hitter of all-time. The Rebels first baseman hit his 21st home run of the season in the top of the third of Regional play against Arizona, tying Jason Huisman (1998) and Brian Pettway for the program record.

The solo shot was the second homer of the afternoon for Elko, who also had a two-RBI long ball in the first inning. It also increased the Rebels’ advantage to 5-3 heading into the fourth inning.

It didn’t take long for the Wildcats to answer, as Blake Paugh hit his second home run in the fourth inning to tie the game back up at 5. The contest has so far been a slugfest, with all 10 of the runs so far being scored on home runs. In addition to Elko, second baseman Peyton Chatagnier also had a two-RBI homer in the second inning. Arizona also has a three home runs of its own to bring the game’s combined total to six.

The home run for Tim Elko also moved him into sole possession of second place in Ole Miss career history with 43 long balls. He is now just five homers behind all-time leader Kyle Gordon, who totaled 48 home runs from 1984-87.

Ole Miss is the only team that has yet to suffer a loss in the Cora Gables Regional, with host Miami having already been eliminated. The Rebels defeated the Hurricanes by a score of 2-1 on Sunday and also handed Arizona its lone loss of the Regional on Saturday. If they can ultimately beat the Wildcats again, it would advance them to Super Regionals. However, a loss would force a winner-take-all rematch later this evening.

Elko will hope to keep the Rebels postseason running going as he continues to climb the all-time home run list.
