Ryan Folmar breaks down what went wrong for Oral Roberts
One of the darlings of the College World Series, Oral Roberts exited the tournament on Tuesday with a 6-1 loss to TCU. It was a heck of a run.
The Golden Eagles became just the second team ever to win a game in Omaha after being seeded as a No. 4 seed in NCAA Regional play. So there was plenty for the team to celebrate, even after the loss to the Horned Frogs.
“Man, proud of the way our guys competed all year long,” coach Ryan Folmar said. “I don’t think today is by any way going to define our season. But, man, what a great run. I’m so thankful to be part of such a historic group that made a run like this.”
Oral Roberts managed to get to the winner’s bracket at the College World Series briefly before losing a very tight contest to Florida. In the opening game in Omaha, Oral Roberts put together a thrilling come-from-behind win to beat TCU 6-5.
TCU would get its revenge days later, eliminating Oral Roberts from the field.
“I’m proud of the way our guys hung in there,” Folmar said. “It did not go well for us. I thought we played pretty sloppy all the way around.”

In one of the rare noncompetitive games in Omaha this year, Oral Roberts fell behind early and never really mounted a serious threat against TCU. The team was able to create some scoring opportunities, just couldn’t finish them off.
“Again, when you score one run against good clubs, it’s not a recipe to win for sure,” Folmar said. “We left another 12 guys on base today, 13 yesterday or Sunday and just not enough. We could never get that big swing. We couldn’t have that big moment today. And it just wasn’t our day.”
Still, Oral Roberts did something only one other team had done.
Prior to their arrival in Omaha, only two teams had ever made it to the College World Series as a regional four-seed. Fresno State did it in 2008, when the Bulldogs won it all. And Kent State did it in 2012, but Kent State failed to win a game in Omaha.
So it was a pretty epic ride for Oral Roberts, even with the loss and the exit.
“I just don’t want it to overshadow what this team has accomplished and what this team has done,” Folmar said. “Proud to be part of it.”
