After spending three years at Auburn, Bo Nix transferred to Oregon and quickly became one of the best quarterbacks in the game. Nix is back in 2023 for a fifth season in college football where he’s looking to take another step forward.

With spring practice now in the rearview mirror, Nix looked back and explained where he thinks he’s developed the most this spring

“I think just, last year, I had a lot of, you know, dissecting defenses, understanding what they were doing at a different level, at a more complex level, I think,” Bo Nix said. “And throughout spring, I kind of felt that carry over. So, that was good to get those reps again and to make sure that I was seeing things, seeing coverages, seeing front blitzes that maybe last year at this time I didn’t see.”

For head coach Dan Lanning, the biggest difference he has seen in Bo Nix is in his vocal leadership.

“The ability to be vocal and know that he doesn’t have to wait for somebody to say ‘Hey, go ahead and say it.’ He’s willing to do that. And he’s done a good job of that,” Lanning said.

“It was kind of ‘earning the respect’ versus ‘he’s earned the respect.’ Now that leadership role is expected for Bo. Expect him to step up and he has those traits.”

Bo Nix on using last season as motivation

Oregon came out hot to start the 2022 season. However, losses to rivals Washington and Oregon State took the Ducks out of the PAC-12 race. Now, Bo Nix is using that bad finish as motivation for the 2023 season.

“I just felt like last year, we could have just finished at times better. And we know that’s something going into this year that we need to do,” Nix said.

“We were in a great spot last year and then didn’t finish. This year, our goal is to go and be the best that we can be. One of my personal goals is to win a championship. So, you know, it’s something that last year we weren’t able to do and yeah, that does bother me because I feel like we had a — we were in position to do that last year. We were capable of doing it. So, this year, we’ve got to start over, go back. When we get into fall camp, get into the season, just continue to work to finish those kind of games and make that next step.”
