Dan Lanning addresses Michigan scandal, scouts at Oregon games
The Michigan sign-stealing scandal took another turn recently as it was revealed that the Wolverines were monitoring more than just Big Ten rivals. With the stir this news has caused within college football, head coaches across the country have weighed in on the matter. And recently, the Oregon Ducks headman shared his thoughts on the subject.
“I don’t have a lot of thoughts on it. I haven’t been focusing on it that much. Ultimately, that’ll all sort itself out,” said Lanning.
One of the more talked about instances of Michigan’s sign stealing was during the College Football Playoff. It has been reported that the Wolverines had individuals attend SEC games, viewing possible opponents in the CFP. One of those teams they viewed was Georgia, where Lanning was the defensive coordinator, who Michigan played in the semi-final that season. But when asked if he remembers anything from that season from the Wolverines, Lanning gave a simple yet pointed response.
“I just remember the result of that game… I haven’t been in the NFL, so I don’t I can’t speak to how that works necessarily. I’m sure that would help from a signal standpoint. Ultimately, you’re still gonna have to have signals that you communicate with each other. Even if one person’s on the field getting the call, somehow they have to really call to everybody else. Unless we’re going to get out of the huddle every snap, which is probably not the reality in college football.”
If Michigan did acquire Georgia signs inappropriately, it did not help them in that contest. The Bulldogs dominated the Wolverines 34-11 on their way to winning the national championship.
Lanning provides expectations for environment at Utah
This weekend, the Oregon Ducks are going to travel to Salt Lake City where they will take on the Utah Utes. That’s a game that Oregon head coach Dan Lanning expects to have an excellent environment.
Ahead of that game, Lanning shared that because of the job both teams have done this season, he’s preparing for a loud environment in Salt Lake City.

“I think it’ll be a great environment,” Dan Lanning said. “You know, I know that they get loud there. I know that they love their team. So, it should be a lot of fun for us. I think that speaks you know, obviously, to the job that Utah has done this year and the job that we’ve done this year to put ourselves in that position to have GameDay there.”
This will be Dan Lanning’s first time coaching on the road against Utah since getting to Oregon. However, the Ducks did play the Utes last season in Eugene, winning a close game 20-17. It’s expected to be a great game, with ESPN’s College GameDay in town for the key Pac-12 game.
Utah has had a phenomenal season to this point, despite dealing with several major injuries. That ability to handle injuries is something that Dan Lanning is incredibly impressed with.
“The amount of injuries that they’ve dealt with, and for him to be able to utilize defensive personnel on offense and shuffle positions and utilize offensive linemen at tight end and I think it’s just really impressive,” Lanning said.
