Dan Lanning took the Oregon job at a unique time in college football. Between conference realignment, playoff expansion, and NIL, what you need to navigate as a head coach is changing rapidly. All of that is hard enough to manage before you consider that Lanning needs to learn how to be a head coach on the field for the first time too.

While speaking to the media, Dan Lanning was asked about NIL. In particular, he was asked about two new NIL collectives that recently started at Oregon.

“I’m excited for opportunities for our players to go earn the most they can possibly earn,” Dan Lanning said.

“Right now, I would tell you my complete focus is on our performance on the field. But does (the collective) affect recruiting? Absolutely. Does that affect our ability to get great players here? Absolutely. Does it allow our players to have an opportunity to be successful? Yes. And our fans to be involved.”

Unlike many coaches, Dan Lanning sounds excited for NIL. He does point out that it isn’t his focus and that it does impact the team. However, he also makes it clear that he’s working to adjust to a new era.

“So I’m excited about all those things, but it’s not in the forefront for me. None of that stuff will be in the forefront until we get to February,” Dan Lanning concluded.

Dan Lanning is excited for home opener

For now, Dan Lanning’s focus is on the field. That means looking to rebound in Oregon’s home opener, which Lanning is incredibly excited for.

“I am excited personally to see our fans show up,” Dan Lanning said. “Everybody talks about the experience at Autzen Stadium. I want to see that first-hand on Saturday. I want to see our fans out here, because they can certainly impact our game.”
