Dan Lanning after win vs. Ohio State: 'This is why you come to Oregon'
The top five matchup between Oregon and Ohio State lived up to all the hype Saturday night in Eugene. It was the Ducks who ultimately came out on top, outlasting the Buckeyes by the narrow score of 32-31 in a game that came down to the final play.
Fans stormed the field at Autzen Stadium as Dan Lanning earned his first victory against a top five opponent. The coach had to yell over the crowd noise during his postgame interview, praising his team for holding on despite a late push from Ohio State.
“I’m so proud of our players,” he said. “I’m so proud of our crowd. You talk about big moments, big games. This is why you come to Oregon. That’s a good football team. Hard to stop. Our guys stopped them tonight. They scored enough. They threw enough jabs and we get the dub.”
Oregon drove down to kick the go-ahead field goal with 1:47 remaining in the game, which was still plenty of time for Ohio State to answer. The Buckeyes nearly did too, driving down to the Ducks 28-yard line to get in field goal range.
However, Ohio State would go backwards 20 yards due to a pair of penalties to put them out of range again. With six seconds left on the clock, the Oregon defense gave quarterback Will Howard no open targets. He panicked and scrambled forward, running out the clock to give the Ducks the win.
After seeing his team convert such a situation many times in practice, Lanning was happy to see it come to fruition in a game.

“They do it on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday,: he said. “These guys fight every day, I’m crazy proud of them.”
Dillon Gabriel paced the offense in an efficient performance to finish 23-of-34 passing for 341 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also rushed for 32 yards, including a clutch 27-yard touchdown to start off the fourth quarter.
It was a massive victory for the Ducks, which should move up to No. 2 in the AP poll this coming week. It also sets them up in a great position to make the conference title game based on their remaining schedule.
Oregon will have a quick turnaround as it next faces Purdue at 5 p.m. PT on Friday in West Lafayette.
