Dan Lanning assesses himself as a head coach so far
When Oregon lost head coach Mario Cristobal to Miami, the program had to find a new head coach for the fifth time since Mike Bellotti transitioned from head coach to athletic director in 2008. The Ducks decided to go with Dan Lanning, an up-and-coming coach with no prior head coaching experience who had led the Georgia defense to one of the best seasons on that side of the ball in modern history.
While speaking to the media, Dan Lanning was asked how he grades himself as a first-time head coach through six weeks of his first season and where he needs to improve.
“I’ve got a lot to improve,” Dan Lanning said. “I’ve got a lot to improve.”

“I’m not in charge of grading myself. That’s not my job. But, we do a self-scout of our program. I do a self-scout of myself. What things can I do better, right? So, that’s going to continue to exist. I’m going to continue to grow and develop as a coach.”

Things got off to a rocky start for Dan Lanning, losing badly to his former team in Georgia. Since then, while not always being perfect, Oregon has won five straight games and climbed to number 12 in the AP Poll. That’s only one spot behind where they were initially.
It’s early, but Oregon fans should be happy with the return they’ve gotten for their investment in Dan Lanning. Next up for Lanning is UCLA, an unbeaten PAC-12 opponent.
