What a ride it’s been for Oregon running back Kilohana Haasenritter. The Hawaiian H-back spent two years at several positions for the University of Hawaii. After failing to see the field at all as a true freshman and redshirt freshman, Haasenritter finally left home for better opportunities in the continental United States. He didn’t go too far, landing at Oregon under new head coach Dan Lanning, where he was granted a third freshman year due to not playing in his first two.

So Kilohana Haasenritter was likely an afterthought in the Oregon running back room. In fact, Haasenritter bulked up a bit after leaving Honolulu and committed to the Ducks with the intention of playing fullback. Well, two games into the season and he’s back at running back and actually getting carries for Oregon.

He didn’t see the field during the merciless Georgia beatdown, but sprang into action in Week 2 vs. Eastern Washington. Haasenritter received the first handoff of his career vs. the fellow Pacific Northwest foe, along with six more of them. He totaled 37 yards on those seven carries and even scored a touchdown. After three seasons now waiting to get on the field, Kilohana Haasenritter’s college football debut featured him scoring a touchdown in an Oregon uniform.

Dan Lanning and some of the other coaches on the staff weren’t surprised, though. Haasenritter has shown them he is capable since arriving in Eugene. Here was Lanning praising the freshman RB after the EWU game:

“You know, we have a couple of our coaches that have come from the Hawaii staff. So they were familiar with with Kilo. He just comes out there and works every single day. And to see him have a couple of those runs that he had in the game the other day, I don’t think was a surprise to any of us coaches or any of the players on the team. Because he works like that everyday in practice and he also had a big play on kickoff. Continue to look for him to be a guy that can help us and and push us over the edge to be successful.”

Finally, the start of a potentially great career for Kilohana Haasenritter.
