Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks looked towards an ex-NFL coach to add some more firepower to their coaching staff.

According to Matt Zenitz, the Ducks are expected to hire former Las Vegas Raiders and Carolina Panthers staffer Matt Lombardi to their coaching staff, as he has familiarity with Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein from their time together in Louisville.

“Oregon is expected to hire ex-Las Vegas #Raiders and Carolina #Panthers staffer Matt Lombardi as an analyst, a source tells @247sports,” Zenitz posted on X. “Was an offensive assistant and assistant receivers coach for the Raiders in 2023. Worked with Oregon OC Will Stein at Louisville.”

The more the merrier, as Oregon continues to hire experienced, talented coaches to their staff. We’ll see how Matt Lombardi fits in with the Ducks moving forward.

Moreover, Oregon will transition from one experienced quarterback to another with the addition of quarterback Dillon Gabriel out of the transfer portal. He is exactly what the Ducks need to based on the assessment of the Ducks’ new starter from Dan Lanning.

On3’s J.D. PicKell interviewed Lanning on ‘The Hard Count’ and discussed Gabriel as a fit for Oregon for this fall. Lanning said that he will fill in nicely as a piece that will help the team compete at a high level again, especially considering many of last season’s contenders had veteran quarterbacks starting for them.

“Well, I think that we all know it starts at quarterback,” said Lanning. “You’ve got to have people that can compete to win. If you don’t have that? It’s really hard to win in college ball.”

“Dillon has proven to be a winner. He has had a lot of success in college football,” Lanning continued. “I think you look at the final stretch in college football last season? You see a lot of quarterbacks with experience.”

Now, with Gabriel in the fold as well as another portal quarterback, it’s easy to see why Lanning is very high on where the program sits at that position going into next season.
