Dan Lanning shares his hopes for takeaways on Oregon scrimmage
While some teams are wrapping up their spring practice sessions, Oregon still has plenty to go, including a spring game in front of fans on April 29. This past weekend, the Ducks held their first team scrimmage of the spring session, which went pretty well according to the coaching staff.
After the game, head coach Dan Lanning discussed some of his initial takeaways and was asked what he hoped to see going into the game.
That question prompted the following response from Lanning, who listed a number of questions he wanted to see answered during this weekend’s scrimmage:
“You got to figure out, okay, who are the guys that we make sure we get on the field and get involved? Who are the guys that are close that we can get in there if we coach the technique properly? Then, where’s the want to? What’s that look like? Where are the team players, what kind of body language do the guys play with when things go well, when things don’t go well? A lot of opportunities, a lot of things to coach. And then schematically, what do we need to change to make sure that we’re prepared for certain situations?”
A lot of unknowns where Lanning needs answers. Luckily, he was able to see a physical and focused effort from his guys, as he explained when providing this short recap of the scrimmage as a whole:

“Scrimmage one, it was good to get get the guys out there see them compete. It was the first time that we’ve been live this spring, tackle to the ground. Guys did a great job handling that and did also good job protecting their teammates. Thought we ran the ball with some physicality. But all together, good day, good competitive day. Won’t be able to answer a ton of questions on performances until I go back and watch the film but just good to see our guys get out there compete and play physical.”
Sounds like the Ducks were engaged like Lanning was hoping. However, some of those questions won’t be able to be answered until later in the preseason. Of course, Oregon still has a few more weeks of spring ball to sort out whichever of those questions weren’t answered on Saturday.
Then, on April 29, they’ll do it all over again, but that time, in front of a live audience during the spring game.
