Former Texas State infielder Daylan Pena commits to Oregon

Former Texas State infielder Daylan Pena has committed to Oregon out of the transfer portal, On3 has learned.

Pena joins the Ducks following three productive seasons in San Marcos, ending his three year career with the Bobcats with 165 total games played and 160 starts. Boasting a career .262 batting average with 157 hits in his 600 total at bats.

Pena played high school baseball at Veterans Memorial High School in Corpus Christi, Texas where he was ranked as the No. 9 first baseman in Texas and the No. 111 overall prospect in the state according to Perfect Game. Also ranked the No. 40 first baseman in the entire 2021 recruiting class after batting .396 with 15 doubles and seven home runs in his senior season.

He made an immediate impact as a true freshman at Texas State with 53 starts at first base and one as the designated hitter. Batting .270 with a career-high 58 hits, 44 RBIs, and 44 runs on the season. Which he followed with a 48-hit sophomore season where his batting average dipped but his power hitting increased. Hitting a career-high 11 home runs with a .474 slugging percentage and a .245 batting average.

Last season for the Bobcats Pena batted .270 again with 51 hits, 43 RBIs, and a career-high 15 doubles. Earning Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week honors for the week of March 19 after posting a .444 average with three home runs, nine RBIs, five runs scored, and one stolen base in a 4-0 stretch for Texas State. Which he followed by becoming the first player in program history to hit two grand slams in one game in a win over UTSA the same day he took home the award. .

Pena entered the transfer portal with just one season of eligibility remaining, choosing to change his scenery and close out his collegiate career with Oregon. A program that will look to secure their fifth straight NCAA Tournament appearance next season after back to back Super Regional berths.
