Oregon has made no bones about offering prospects in the state of Texas, first offer Austin Westlake EDGE Colton Vasek on Wednesday before also extending one to Round Rock Stony Point running back Cameron Cook.

Cook is the No. 260 overall prospect in the 2023 class, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He ranks as the nation’s No. 14 running back and the No. 44 junior prospect in the Lone Star State.

“#AGTG I am extremely blessed to say that after an amazing talk with Coach Locklyn, I have received a D1 offer [from] the University of Oregon!!” Cook wrote on Twitter.

The 5-foot-10, 180-pounder has totaled more than a dozen offers thus far, including Texas, Cincinnati, SMU, Penn State, USC and Ole Miss. The home-state Longhorns have been a frequent destination for Cook, hosting him twice since September. He also recently visited SMU in January and talked with On3’s Gerry Hamilton about his recruitment.

“It’s been a lot, but it’s everything I have wanted,” Cook told Hamilton last month. “I was prepared for it. It has been a great experience so far, and I hope it keeps going.”

Texas offer nearly brought his mom to tears

Cook took in junior day in January at Texas. The hometown Texas offer meant a lot to his family. His mother is a Texas graduate, and the offer nearly brought her to tears.

“I was really surprised (Texas offered). We walked in, we ate and then we took pictures and stuff. Then we split up and went with our position coach. He talked about how he wanted his running backs to run, and stuff like that.”

New Texas running backs coach Tashard Choice has made an instant impact on Cook’s recruitment. The way in which Choice offered Cook displays his understanding of making a statement in the recruiting process.

“After we were in the huddle in the running back room, he dabbed everyone up. I talked to him for a little bit, and then asked where my mom was at. Then we walked to my mom, and then he offered me in front of her. I don’t know if he offered me in front of here because she is a UT alumni. She is a ride or die UT fan. She almost broke into tears.”

Cook wants to play running back

Cook is one of the top junior prospects in Texas when it comes to versatility. While he has pass catching ball skills, quick feet and slot capability, he wants to be primarily used as a running back.

“I want to be a running back. I want schools to be able to use me as a receiver when they need me. Some of the schools see me as a running back, but some schools see me as a three down back. So I can run, and then they will put me in the slot.”

Cameron Cook totaled 695 rushing yards and seven touchdowns in seven games as a junior prior to a high ankle sprain. He added 10 receptions for 153 yards and two additional scores.
