The No. 6 quarterback in the On3 2021 recruiting class rankings is already making his presence known for Oregon football. Ty Thompson, a 6-foot-4, 223 pound quarterback out of Arizona, won player of the game during the Duck’s first scrimmage Saturday.

Ducks coach Mario Cristobal had plenty of good things to say about Thompson, who is also On3’s No. 6 quarterback in the 2021 class, after the scrimmage.

“He was decisive tonight,” Cristobal said of Thompson. “He was decisive tonight. When there was pressure he found his way out most of the time. Towards the end of the two-minute, he didn’t eat the ball. Sometimes a freshman will say ‘I don’t want to throw an interception’, will eat the ball and now the clock is dead… He was very precise for most of the evening. I thought he made good decisions in the running game as well. The RPO decisions looked like they were really good. He’s a really good football player. The sky is the limit for Ty.”

Although Thompson had a great day and gained recognition from his coach, Anthony Brown is still expected to start for Oregon football at quarterback. He brings starting experience from Boston College, where he spent three season before transferring to Oregon last year.

Cristobal was also complimentary of Brown, but sprinkled in a bit of criticism as well.

“Anthony, early I thought had some pressure, delivered some good balls, some were accurate some were not,” he said. “I thought some really bright moments, other ones you’d like to have back. I thought he did a good job getting out of pressure, getting out of some collapsed pockets, and making plays with his feet. I’ll have to watch the rest on film.”

The coach also offered his thoughts on the other two quarterback candidates, freshmen Jay Butterfield and Robby Ashford.

“I thought Butterfield did really good,” he said. “Robby was limited today, only because he’d been dinged up earlier in the week. Nothing too bad, but we only gave him a few series today. You saw him go right down the field. He and Isaiah hooked up three times in the same drive.”

Cristobal added that some young receivers got reps with the first team and that there were still some things to fix. But overall it was a positive first scrimmage, especially at the quarterback position.

“All in all, these quarterbacks are coming and we have a lot of confidence in them,” he said.
