Report: Oregon to extend contract of Dan Lanning
According to John Canzano of 750 The Game, Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning will be receiving a new deal from the program. Despite spending just one season in Eugene, they plan on keeping him around for another six years. Lanning’s contract is set to be extended through the 2028 season.
Oregon is also giving the head coach a pay raise, putting him up there with others across the country. Lanning might be in the early stages of his tenure with the Ducks but athletic director Rob Mullens is putting faith in him.
“BREAKING: University of Oregon has extended the contract of football coach Dan Lanning, per source,” Canzano said in a tweet. “Contract for @CoachDanLanning extended through the 2028 season. Extension puts his salary in the Top 15-20 nationally. UO Board expected to approve the extension Thursday.”
When Oregon hired Lanning, he was in the midst of a College Football Playoff run with the Georgia Bulldogs. He wound up winning the national championship as the defensive coordinator. After celebrating with the Bulldogs, Lanning immediately headed out West and got to work for the Ducks.
In the first season, Oregon finished with double-digit wins thanks to taking down North Carolina in the Holiday Bowl. The program is used to getting at least 10 wins on the resume but Lanning accomplishing it in his first year maybe had the Ducks ahead of schedule.

Lanning has recruited at an elite level, finishing with a top-10 class (No. 8 overall) in the 2023 cycle. He has been a consistent user of the NCAA transfer portal as well, helping Oregon have immediate success. A great recipe in today’s college football world.
Even if there was not a fresh contract extension, expectations were going to be high heading into the 2023 season. The Pac-12 is going to be a gauntlet this season, with multiple teams vying for the conference championship. Whoever winds up winning in Las Vegas has a great chance of appearing in the College Football Playoff too.
Lanning will be hoping Oregon is in the conversation as the regular season winds down. With his great defensive coaching background and an experienced quarterback in Bo Nix, everything is coming together ahead of fall camp and into the beginning of the regular season.
And even if they are not, we now know the head coach will have at least five more attempts at a national championship.
