Dan Lanning addresses chants made by Oregon fans during win over BYU
During Saturday’s win in Euguene, a group of Oregon fans was caught on video chanting offensive statements to both BYU and Mormons. On what should have been a good day for the Ducks, the event has caused some controversy for head coach Dan Lanning and his program.
Lanning addressed what was said at Autzen Stadium, saying he was “frustrated and disgusted” to hear those chants. Both he and athletic director Rob Mullens have reached out to BYU to apologize for the incident and say there is no room for something like that at Oregon.

“Like many of you, really frustrated and disgusted to hear some of the things that were said during the game,” Lanning said during his Monday press conference. “Got the opportunity to reach out to Coach Kalani (Sitake.) Our athletic director, Rob, got to reach out to their AD Tom (Holmoe) there at BYU and expressed our frustration and also apologized for the behavior of a few that really puts a cloud over a great group.
“And a really fun situation for our players and our fans on Saturday. That being said, there’s no room for that in our stadium. Anybody that is going to partake in that doesn’t need to be in our stadium. That’s been addressed.”
Saturday marked just the seventh time Oregon and BYU have faced off against one another. It was the first in Euguene since 1990 as the Ducks took a 4-3 lead in the series. And for now, there is no other matchup on the future schedule.

“The University of Oregon sincerely apologizes for an offensive and disgraceful chant coming from the student section during yesterday’s game against Brigham Young University,” the apology reads.
“These types of actions go against everything the university stands for, and it goes against the spirit of competition. We can and will do better as a campus community that has no place for hate, bias or bigotry.”
