Kirk Herbstreit reacts to Oregon's last-second win over Ohio State
In the words of ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit, Oregon proved it is the “real deal” after taking out Ohio State on Saturday. The Ducks survived to pull out a 32-31 victory against the No. 2 Buckeyes and stake their claim as frontrunners in the Big Ten.
Oregon drove down to kick the go-ahead field goal with 1:47 remaining and then kept Ohio State from returning the favor to hold on. Herbstreit took to social media following the game to offer his thoughts, still coming down after the adrenaline from the exciting finish.
Wow. What a game!!” Hersbtreit wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Congrats to @oregonfootball on a HUGE win! Players stepped up when it mattered most and (Dillon) Gabriel and his weapons delivered. Oregon real deal and now we know (after some easier opponents and home games) that @OhioStateFB is a very good team. They’ll drop a few spots but are clearly one of the top teams in the country!”
Gabriel paced the offense in an efficient performance to finish 23-fo-34 passing for 341 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also rushed for 32 yards, including a clutch 27-yard touchdown to start off the fourth quarter.
The quarterback kept his calm on the final offensive drive of the game for Oregon, completing 5-of-6 passes to lead the Ducks all the way down to the 1-yard line. Although the failed to score a touchdown, the field goal proved all they needed to pull off the victory.

Ohio State would make things interesting as it got in field goal range itself. However, a 15-yard penalty a couple plays later and then poor clock management by quarterback Will Howard, who scrambled and ran out the clock, ultimately lost the Buckeyes the game.
With receiver Traeshon Holden ejected in the first half, Oregon got a big game out of Evan Stewart, who had seven receptions for 149 yards and a touchdown.
Overall, proved itself capable of beating one of the best teams in the country, which Herbstreit believes Ohio State still is. The Ducks will look to carry the momentum from this big win over into next week when they face Purdue on the road.
