One of the surprise teams of the college baseball postseason has been Oregon. As the Ducks get ready to host Oral Roberts in the Super Regional, head coach Mark Wasikowski explained what makes this Oregon team so special.

As Wasikowski explained, this Oregon team has been clutch, winning tough games.

“I don’t know, they won games at the right time I guess is what that tells me about them,” Mark Wasikowski said. “They’ve won a lot of games at the right time. They were able to, you know, the Vanderbilt regional was really intense, especially the game against Vanderbilt.”

Oregon advanced from the Nashville Regional, beating Vanderbilt and Xavier twice to do so.

“It was a packed house and there were times in that game where it could have gotten away from us, and our guys collected themselves and had the poise to make pitches and have good at bats. And so the talent that was on the field for Vanderbilt that we had to beat was extreme. It was extremely good and for the kids to be able to go through that,” Wasikowski said.

“I don’t think anybody picked us to win that. I don’t think anybody picked us to be in this position. The back against the wall kind of thing is real and it’s still a deal where our backs are against the wall. We’ve still got plenty of people who don’t believe that we should be there or whatever, and that’s great. That’s something we get the chance to prove that we do belong and not only that do we belong but like Jacob Walsh said after, I believe, it was the first game of the Pac-12 Tournament, we’re here to win this thing.”

Oregon is fighting for a chance to go to Omaha. It would be the team’s first trip to the College World Series since 1954.

“We’re here to win this tournament and that was the first tournament. This is the second tournament. Those are the same words that I bet Jacob would say now.”

Mark Wasikowski says hosting a Super Regional is special

This Super Regional against Oral Roberts is the first that Oregon has hosted since 2012. So, for Mark Wasikowski and the Ducks, this is a special moment.

“It’s special,” Wasikowski said. “I know they’ve got a lot of things planned, they’ve got a big fan fest out there in the parking lot similar to a football tailgate. They’ve got things where they’re going to be giving out season tickets for next year 25 percent off and they’ve already sold the thing out, and I think they sold it out in less than an hour or so.”
