Mason Neville blasts 3-run HR vs. UCLA to set Oregon single-season record

The Oregon baseball team wasted little time making some history on Easter Sunday. Rather, center fielder Mason Neville wasted little time.

With his team trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning in a game against UCLA, Neville stepped to the plate with a pair of runners on. The Ducks had managed to put runners on first and second base with a pair of singles.

That gave Neville the chance to do something special. And he did not disappoint.

On a 2-1 pitch, Mason Neville wound up and cranked one over the right field wall for a three-run home run. It was his 19th of the season, making him the new single-season leader in program history.

It had been a very back-and-forth affair on Sunday before Mason Neville gave Oregon a 6-4 lead with his three-run bomb. Oregon jumped out to the early lead before surrendering it in subsequent innings.

The Ducks took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. They did so after a trio of back-to-back-to-back singles plated Drew Smith. An RBI groundout by second baseman Ryan Cooney plated the second run.

UCLA drew one back to make it 2-1 in the top of the third inning. After a hit by pitch and a double, a grounder to third base by shortstop Roch Cholowsky scored the runner at third.

The Bruins then scored three runs in the top of the fourth, prompting Mason Neville’s heroics a half inning later. UCLA scored first with a solo home run by third baseman Roman Martin.

Then, a single and a double was followed by a pair of groundouts. The second of the two groundouts scored a second run, putting UCLA ahead 3-2. After an error at shortstop, another run scored, making it 4-2.

Mason Neville helped Oregon flip things around and take the lead in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Oregon maintained its 6-4 lead going into the top of the sixth inning at the time of this writing.
