Northwestern transfer CB Theran Johnson commits to Oregon
Former Northwestern cornerback Theran Johnson has committed to Oregon, via the NCAA Transfer Portal, per On3’s Hayes Fawcett. Johnson was the No. 3 available cornerback in the On3 Transfer Portal Player Rankings.
Johnson spent four seasons at Northwestern, amassing 96 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, 20 passes defended and three interceptions in 33 career appearances. Johnson had a career year in the 2024 campaign, tallying 46 tackles, two picks and 11 pass break-ups. For his efforts, he was named an All-Big Ten Second-Team selection.
Theran Johnson played high school football at North Central (IN), where he was a three-star prospect. He was the No. 785 overall recruit and No. 73 cornerback in the 2021 recruiting cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
Johnson’s commitment is massive for the Ducks, who are slated to lose three cornerbacks at the end of this season. However, for now, Oregon can only focus on what’s ahead in the College Football Playoff.
Oregon prepares for the College Football Playoff
As the No. 1 overall seed Oregon has a bye in the first round of the CFP. The Ducks will face off against the winner between Tennessee and Ohio State on Jan. 1. While Oregon head coach Dan Lanning is excited for the challenge, FOX Sports’ analyst Joel Klatt tore into the CFP selection committee when discussing the Ducks’ bracket path.

“Oregon’s path to the National Championship [Game], their reward for going 13-0 and having the best regular season in all of college football, which is supposed to be the most valuable regular season in all of sports — the reward for that is having to play the three highest odds team to win the national championship,” Klatt stated. “They’re going to have to go through possibly Ohio State, Texas, and Georgia to win the national championship.
“Congratulations, Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks. You got absolutely screwed by the Playoff Committee because their sentiment of trying to create artificial floors rose some of these teams to the levels where they shouldn’t be. That’s the problem.”
