The Oregon Ducks survived their trip to Lubbock, TX, edging out the upset-minded Texas Tech Red Raiders for the Week 2 win. While it was a game highlighted by two programs known for their offensive firepower going head to head, it was actually the Ducks’ defense that sealed the game for them late. Thanks to back-to-back interceptions by Oregon, they’re off to a 2-0 start following their 38-30 victory on Saturday night.

And what did Oregon do defensively to earn the victory? Back-to-back interceptions in the final minute, with the first one a pick-6 by Jeffrey Bassa to put Oregon up eight with less than a minute to play in the game. The second interception came with zeros on the clock as senior defensive back Bryan Addison picked off Red Raiders quarterback Tyler Shough in the end zone to seal the game.

You can check out the Ducks’ pick-6 in the video below.

Oregon was down late to Texas Tech but was able to score 20 points in the fourth quarter to mount a comeback and pick up the victory, remaining undefeated on the season. Up next for the Ducks is a Week 3 matchup against Hawaii back in Eugene, OR.

Oregon game recap

Star quarterback Bo Nix added another impressive performance to his resume against Texas Tech. The Oregon signal-caller went 32-44 in passing attempts with 359 yards through the air, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. He was also the Ducks leading rusher in the game with nine carries for 46 yards and had the team’s longest run on the night of 16 yards.

On the other side of the ball, Oregon’s defense did give up 456 yards of total offense and allowed Texas Tech to convert seven of their 12 third down attempts, but they were opportunistic for much of the night. Oregon forced a total of four turnovers, picking off Shough three times in the game. They also forced the Red Raiders quarterback to fumble twice, recovering one of the fumbles. Oregon also finished the game with four sacks and five tackles for loss.

One area the team will need to improve on is the penalty department. Against Texas Tech, Oregon committed 14 penalties for a staggering 124 yards, doubling up the Red Raider’s six penalties, which were worth 65 yards. That is something Dan Lanning and crew will look to clean up in practice this week and hope to have resolved before their likely top-25 showdown with the upstart Colorado Buffaloes in Week 4.
