Oregon defensive lineman Johnny Bowens is entering his name into the transfer portal.

Bowens told On3’s Hayes Fawcett that he has completed the paperwork to transfer in the portal after one season with the Ducks.

Bowens redshirted during his only season at Eugene. He did tally statistics in their season-opening, 81-7 win over Portland State where he had a pair of tackles.

Bowens, a native of Converse, Texas, played high school football at Judson. He was a four-star prospect there as the No. 206 overall recruit in the 2023 cycle. That’s according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He ranked as a Top-25 DL in the class and a Top-50 player out of the state.

Bowens committed to them in November of 2022. He then came in as part of the No. 7 class in the nation for Oregon in On3’s 2023 Industry Football Team Recruiting Rankings. He was the ninth highest-rated member of the class overall, including one of 17 four-stars, out of 30 total commitments.

Now, in the offseason, Bowens will be one of the double-digit number of transfers to leave Oregon. Six of those others are on the defense, including two defensive lineman in Tevita Pome’e (Oregon State) and Jake Shipley (North Texas). After that, they lost two safeties in Trikweze Bridges (Florida) and Daymon David, a cornerback in Bryan Addison (UCLA), and a linebacker in Jaden Navarrette.

In turn, the Ducks have added one of the best portal classes in the nation. Their 11 transfers rank at No. 6 in On3’s 2024 Team Transfer Portal Rankings. Of the near dozen, six are for the defensive side of the football. Ja’Maree Caldwell (Houston) will join their line on defense. The other five, three corners and a pair of safeties, will join their secondary. That’s before even getting to the two quarterbacks, Dillon Gabriel and Dante Moore, or WR Evan Stewart.
