Dan Lanning identifies young players who stood out during second fall scrimmage
Oregon held its second and final scrimmage of the offseason on Saturday, with an opening weekend matchup against Georgia on the horizon. Head coach Dan Lanning will be looking to make a statement with the Ducks, getting a victory over his former ball club. But for now, the scrimmage is on Lanning’s mind.
Lanning said a few younger guys had an impressive day, naming three true freshmen by name. Two came on the offensive end, while one defensive player got mentioned for a big hit he had. Overall, Lanning seemed impressed with the returns on the 2022 recruiting class thus far.
“Kyler Kasper had a good day,” Lanning said. “It was fun to see him catch a couple deep balls. Jordan James ran the ball really, really hard on offense. It was good to see a young guy do that. Khamari Terrell had a nice big hit on defense. But there were a lot of guys that flew around and had some success today.”
Kasper is out at wide receiver for Oregon, while James plays running back. Lanning had a job of holding together the class after Mario Cristobal left the program. He even made some additions of his own after winning the national championship with Georgia.
Just seeing the young guys go out there and execute, compared to thinking, was something Lanning considered a major success. He said it’s something he wants this early in the year and especially before an important upcoming season.
“The biggest thing is I think you see young guys line up and execute the system and that there was a lot less thinking out there,” said Lanning. “There was a lot more playing, which is what you want.”

Dan Lanning raves over wide receiver Troy Franklin
Lanning recently offered some praise for Oregon wide receiver Troy Franklin and his performance over recent weeks.
Speaking with the media, Lanning revealed why he’s excited to see what Franklin can do for the Ducks this upcoming season.
“He made a nice fade-ball catch on the sidelines and got his toe tap in for a nice catch today. I think he’s been consistent overall,” stated Lanning. “I certainly think there’s still plenty of room for improvement there for Troy, but he’s shown up over the last few weeks for sure.”
During his singular season with the Ducks, Troy Franklin amassed 18 receptions for 209 yards and two touchdowns. With Dan Lanning at the helm, the heralded Oregon wide receiver will be looking for more.
