College football has taken quarterback Dillon Gabriel from his hometown of Mililani, Hawaii, to Orlando to play for UCF, Norman to play for Oklahoma, and now Eugene to play for the Oregon Ducks. Which was the sight of Oregon’s thrilling 32-31 win over No. 2 ranked Ohio State on Saturday in a game that Gabriel had his fingerprints all over.

After the game, Gabriel was being asked about his college football journey that’s taken him ‘coast to coast.’ A phrase that led to him taking a moment to shout out country music star Morgan Wallen for a lyric that the question reminded him of.

“Morgan Wallen, coast to coast doesn’t cut it,” Gabriel sang during the question followed by mumbling more words from Wallen’s tune. A line from his song 98 Braves that actually says, ‘We got close, but close doesn’t cut it.’

Gabriel may not have been exactly accurate on the lyrical reference, but he was surely accurate when it mattered on Saturday night. Completing 67.6% of his passes against the Buckeyes along with 373 total yards and three total touchdowns in the win. Actually taking time to reflect on his college football journey after his musical number.

“I would just say you appreciate it year to year,” Gabriel said. “Each team is different, each place is different and unique. So you appreciate that and the difference. I think I’ve learned a bunch at each stop, and more importantly, who I am as a person, and there’s real development in that as a player, but also as a person through those times.”

Last year in early October, Gabriel had a very similar performance while he was a member of Oklahoma. Once again generating 300 yards of total offense with three touchdowns to lead to Sooners to a thrilling 34-30 comeback win against Texas in the Red River Rivalry game.

But Gabriel’s full attention is on the current chapter of his journey. Now facing the opportunity one of the top teams in the country to championship heights.

“At this point in my career, I just appreciate where I’m at, the present, the people that work so hard to allow us to do what we do. And I never take a day for granted and that’s because I know how hard it is to do what we do as well, and the time we put in, and the grind,” Gabriel explained.

“But that’s something I love and have been addicted to from the beginning, it’s kind of been my way of living. So yeah, just to answer your question, I’ve loved every bit of it.”

Gabriel and the Ducks will travel coast to coast for their next matchup against Purdue on Saturday, looking to remain undefeated after jumping up to the No. 2 spot in the latest AP Poll.
