Ty Thompson of the Oregon Ducks is one of the many quarterbacks in attendance at the Manning Passing Academy this weekend, working with the legendary football family. He will be picking up some knowledge as he continues his first year under head coach Dan Lanning and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Kenny Dillingham.

In between workouts, Thompson had the chance to speak with the media where he was asked about the coaching transition from Mario Cristobal to Lanning. He said everything has been smooth sailing and he can tell the staff is working their tails off. Thompson even tipped his cap to the way Lanning has been recruiting early on.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” Thompson said. “There’s not been too many bumps or hiccups or anything like that. They come in, they were really professional. They work really hard, like day and night. I see a little bit more behind-the-scenes stuff because I’m more involved. But they’re working their butts off to get right for us, get everything right recruiting. I mean you name it, they’re working their tails off. So I’m really happy to have this coaching staff. They’re doing a great job for us.”

Thompson was ranked a five-star prospect by the On3 Consensus coming out of high school, bringing a ton of hype with him to Eugene. He is entering Year Two on campus and finds himself in another battle for the starting quarterback role with Auburn transfer Bo Nix and Jay Butterfield.

Dillingham has been front and center of the competition, evaluating who will take snaps to begin the season against Georgia. Thompson said working with his quarterback coach has been a lot of fun and thinks he has been set up to succeed in the Oregon offense.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” Thompson said. “He’s a fun guy, young guy, brings a lot of energy to the room. And his offense is also a lot of fun, so it fits him perfectly. We spread the ball around a lot, we do some different things. The quarterbacks have a lot to do with the offense.

“We’re pretty much communicating every call with every position, right? So it’s just a lot of fun. Playing quarterback at that level, having that much responsibility is a lot but when you get it right it’s a lot of fun, it’s the most satisfying feeling in the world.”

Thompson will finish the weekend in Louisiana before heading back up to the Pacific Northwest and focusing on the 2022 season. If he is named the starter, expectations will be high for the young quarterback alongside his new head coach.
