At the end of his junior football season, Sunnyslope (Ariz.) three-star quarterback Luke Moga was far from a household name on the recruiting trail. He had one offer at that point, but knew in his gut that more would come. He just didn’t expect them to come quite as quickly as they did. Once his junior tape made the rounds, nearly two dozen offers came in over the next few months.

Power Five programs from across the country — Oregon, Arizona State, Miami, BYU and more — were all of the sudden talking to him every day. But one program continued to leave an impression on him and his family that they couldn’t ignore: Oregon.

The Ducks, led by second-year head coach Dan Lanning and first-year offensive coordinator Will Stein, locked things down on Friday when Moga publicly announced for Oregon.

“There’s only been a few schools up there for me, but Oregon is the one that always stuck out. The reputation, the pedigree. It’s Eugene, Oregon, and I’m a West Coast kid so it’s not too far from home. There’s been some schools, but I’m glad I chose this one.”

Coaches feel he has high potential

Unlike most of his quarterback counterparts in this class, Moga hasn’t been playing the position his whole life. He didn’t even start playing football until his freshman year, and his growth and development over that time has been massive.

He is also one of the most athletic players at that position this cycle, recently posting a 10.7-second 100-meter dash time on the track. That athleticism is something that both Moga and Stein feel he can use at the next level, in addition to his passing skills.

“Coach Stein likes to make things easy for the quarterback, whether that’s motion or moving the pocket. And he likes to throw the ball down the field and what quarterback doesn’t like to throw the ball down the field? He told me he likes quarterbacks can move and, and I see myself sitting there perfectly. I have a different skill set than any other quarterback in the country.”

The Ducks’ early success under Lanning has made them an attractive option to lot of a recruits, but Moga feels like the best is yet to come.

“It’s a winning family environment,” he added. “Obviously last year is his first year. He came in with a great class, came in with great players and, and, you know, they had a great season. Oregon is a top-15 program every year that is competing for Pac-12 championships. He is definitely building something and I think this 2024 class is about to go a lot crazier than most people think.”

Moga will be of one Oregon’s most dogged recruiters

The newly minted Ducks’ signal-caller will be back in Eugene this weekend for the spring game. Now he is on board, he can go fully into recruiting mode. That includes not only helping to land top offensive prospects but defenders as well.

“With a great offense and a great defense, you know, you can win championships,” Moga said. “But with a great offense and a subpar defense, you can’t. And that’s Coach Lanning’s philosophy on recruiting and building a family environment.”

That is what sold him, and it’s what he believes will sell other top recruits on coming to Eugene.

“I had a top three of TCU, Miami and Oregon, and I visited all those schools except TCU,” he said. “Oregon always stuck out. It made me realize that there’s not many opportunities better than this and there’s just a hell of an opportunity, and I’m excited to be an Oregon Duck and can’t wait to get back this weekend.”

He’ll be joined on campus by a handful of others commit and some of the top recruits in the country on both sides of the ball. With his own recruitment out of the way, he can focus on spring football with his high school team and helping build another top-10 class in Eugene.

“Oh, yeah, I’m going to be one of the best, if not the best recruiter in the country,” he said. “When I released my commitment date, I already knew where I was going and I was already putting my recruiting hat on. But now I can go to work, and it’s gonna be a good job for me. I’m excited to build this; a top-five class is my goal.”
