Oregon first baseman Rylee McCoy had to leave an elimination game against Stanford in the second inning after being hit in the face by a line drive. It’s unclear at this point whether she will be able to return.

The play occurred in the top of the second inning as Taryn Kern hit a ball that went flying and directly hit McCoy, who fell to the ground and held her face. Kern advanced to first after McCoy was unable to recover to make the tag. Remmington Hewitt replaced McCoy in the line up as Oregon trailed 4-0 at the time.

If McCoy is unable to return to the game, it would be a big blow to the Oregon bats. The freshman leads the team in home runs with 19 this season to go along with 59 hits, 58 RBI and a .396 batting average. She was the No. 2 overall player in the 2025 class according to Extra Innings Softball.

The Ducks responded well in the meantime as Kaylynn Flannery delivered a three-run homer in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to one run. Stanford didn’t take long to answer as Joie Economides had a three-run shot of her own in the top of the third. It was the second home run of the game for Economides, who also had a grand slam in the first inning.

Oregon came right back with another two runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-5. That is where the score stands now with the Ducks up to bat in the bottom of the fourth. They’ll need other to step up in the absence of McCoy if they hope to move on.

This is the third game this Regional between Oregon and Stanford. Both of the other two contests ended in a run rule, with the Cardinal claiming the first on Saturday and the Ducks the second earlier on Sunday.

If Oregon can come back to win this game, it will move on to Super Regional play. The Ducks would be the host team against Liberty, which upset top-seeded Texas A&M on Sunday evening to advance.

We’ll hope that Rylee McCoy will have time to recover and be back if Oregon does move on to Supers. There will hopefully be further update on her status at the conclusion of this game.
