Oregon hired Dan Lanning coming off winning a national championship at Georgia. Having been the defensive coordinator of one of the best defenses in modern history, there were questions about who he would hire as his own defensive coordinator. The answer ended up being Tosh Lupoi.

Tosh Lupoi has spent time as the defensive coordinator at Alabama, before more recently becoming a position coach in the NFL. He chose to come back to college and work with Dan Lanning, in part because he saw how quickly Lanning has risen through the ranks.

“I think, embracing a growth mindset,” Tosh Lupoi explained how Dan Lanning reached his current role. “That’s what he’s doing every day.”

“And, you know, that was a big part of me coming here was knowing what I was in store for and coming into. And, being part of an environment that’s going to constantly challenge myself and have that same growth mindset to, you know, not just demand it out of our players but our self and our staff that we all can get better, myself included, and to lead by action. I think that’s what Dan represents.”

In 2015, Tosh Lupoi and Dan Lanning were on the same staff at Alabama. Back then, Lanning was a graduate assistant. For his part, Lupoi was a defensive analyst.

Tosh Lupoi also knows Lanning can fight through adversity

One thing that Tosh Lupoi has previously praised Dan Lanning for is his ability to fight through adversity. That’s a culture of resilience that has made its way into the coaching staff as well.

“I think, you know, Dan is someone that embraces adversity, right,” said Tosh Lupoi. “And truly is a So What? Now What? type of individual, you know.”

“That he’s been through a lot. There’s been times of humble beginnings. And it’s an awesome story, so I think you see that every day in him. You know, that he truly does believe and back up his words. And every day when he talks about demands, what he wants from out staff, that he’s living that as well right there with you.”
