One of the best recent traditions in college football takes place at the end of the third quarter of Oregon home games in Autzen Stadium.

Between the third and fourth quarter, Oregon fans and players jam out to “Shout!” from the movie “Animal House,” which was filmed on Oregon’s campus in Eugene.

Oregon is off to one of the hottest starts in college football this season, holding a 3-0 record including a statement win in week 2, walking into Columbus and defeating No. 2 Ohio State, despite missing two of its best defenders.

The Ducks also have wins over Fresno State and Stony Brook on the resume.

Oregon running back CJ Verdell has emerged as a potential Heisman contender after a three-touchdown performance against Ohio State. Verdell has rushed for 289 yards through the first three games of the season, averaging 5.9 yards per carry. Through the air

Defensively, despite injuries to star defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux and linebacker Justin Flowe and others, the Oregon defense has bent, but not broken, through the first three games of the season.

According to Oregon head coach Mario Cristobal, Thibodeaux is still “day-to-day” with an ankle sprain but could be close to returning.

“We’re getting real close so we’re very encouraged by what we see there,” Cristobal told media on Wednesday.

Flowe is out for an extended period with a broken foot, but fellow linebackers Keith Brown and Mase Funa are expected to return on Saturday for Oregon’s conference opener against Arizona.

Funa and Brown missed Oregon’s win over Stony Brook dealing with injuries suffered in the win against Ohio State.

Despite injuries at linebacker, sophomore Noah Sewell has picked up where he left off in 2020. Sewell leads the team in tackles with 22 and has a sack and forced fumble to his name.

In the secondary, Verone McKinley III has emerged as one of the best defensive backs in the country. Through three games, the third-year safety has recorded 17 tackles, three interceptions and one forced fumbles. Elsewhere in the secondary, cornerback Mykael Wright has recorded 17 tackles and a forced fumble of his own.

No. 3 Oregon will open conference play against Arizona on Saturday. Following the win against Ohio State, the Ducks are in serious consideration to earn a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Looking ahead, the Ducks have just one ranked opponent currently in the regular season in No. 24 UCLA, who suffered its first loss of the season against Fresno State in Week 3. The Ducks’ next biggest test of the season will likely come in the Pac-12 Championship if Oregon takes care of business in the regular season.
