The Penn State Nittany Lions and head coach James Franklin came dangerously close to entering this year’s coaching carousel. Midway through the season, rumors started that Franklin could be on his way out of the program. But as the season came to an end, it was another Penn State staffer who was one step away from leaving the program.

Defensive coordinator Anthony Poindexter applied and interviewed for the head coach opening with the Virginia Cavaliers. Unfortunately, from Poindexter, he was beaten out by former Clemson Tigers offensive coordinator Tony Elliott. The Cavaliers did give him serious consideration to go back and coach his alma mater, but in the end, they felt that Elliot was their guy.

Although Poindexter was beaten out for the position, the process has not put a bitter taste in his mouth. During the Penn State Outback Bowl media day interviews, Poindexter spoke about his goals and whether becoming a head coach was still one of them.

“I do, I do. Can’t say that eventually one day that I would not want to be a head coach. I think you know most of us that’s in the business, we all have applications to be a head coach but I think it’ll happen when it happens. It’s just this opportunity wasn’t the right time. And you know, I just felt that in my soul and felt that in my heart that it wasn’t the right time, so I came back. And like I said, I’m ready to work.”
