Drew Allar left the game early in the third quarter following a hit on a designed run on second down. The Penn State quarterback exited after throwing an incomplete pass.

After he took the big hit, it could be described as something in the upper body on the broadcast. Beau Pribula subbed in and immediately ran for 39 yards into Rutgers territory as the Nittany Lions held a 10-6 lead.

Allar was checked out on the sideline upon exiting the game. Prior to exiting the game, Allar was six-of-13 passing for 79 yards.

For Allar, it didn’t look great on the sideline once he came out of the medical tent.

“Drew Allar is out of the injury tent but his favoring his right shoulder heavily on the sideline,” BlueWhite Illustrated’s Greg Pickel wrote on Twitter.

Pribula did not throw a pass before subbing in for Allar, but totaled two carries for five yards prior to his 39 yard run. The backup could not convert a 4th and 1 from the Rutgers four yard line and Penn State turned it over on downs still leading 10-6.

However, Rutgers went three-and-out on the ensuing drive. The lone touchdown of the game was scored by Penn State running back Kaytron Allen, putting the Nittany Lions up 7-3.

Drew Allar, Penn State QBs handling coaching change

Going into the game, Penn State had to deal with a coaching change. Offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich was fired after the Michigan loss.

With that coaching change, head coach James Franklin shared how Allar and the other quarterbacks handled the move.

“I think it goes back to what I tried to say to you guys before, it’s not that we’re trying to hold information from you guys,” Franklin said. “But I want to be able to have healthy dialogue and conversations rather than you just read something online and you don’t understand and it’s shocking and you can’t talk it through. That’s to me when it becomes problematic.

“Or, as a leader, you’re not communicative. And, you don’t talk it through and explain, and talk to the parents, and talk to the high school coach, and talk to the trainers, and talk to the guys.”

Coming into the game, Allar had 1,965 yards, 21 touchdowns, one interception and a 61.6% completion percentage.
