As Penn State gets ready for its high-profile matchup against Ohio State this week, all eyes are on the Nittany Lions’ quarterback situation. Drew Allar left last week’s win over Wisconsin with an injury, and James Franklin had an update during his Wednesday press conference.

Franklin previously deemed Allar a game-time decision and said that will still be the case. However, the goal will be to make sure he and Beau Pribula get looks in practice so they’re prepared for Saturday’s matchup against Ohio State.

“At this stage, no new information for you guys,” Franklin said Wednesday evening. “Game-time decisions. But so far, so good, and getting both Beau and Drew at on of reps in practice.”

Allar went down late in the first half against Wisconsin and left for the locker room early as halftime approached. He went through warmups after the break, but was unable to go, meaning it was Pribula’s game as Penn State went on to get the 28-13 victory at Camp Randall Stadium.

Prior to his injury, Drew Allar completed 14 of 18 passes for 148 yards and a touchdown. His status will be an important storyline as Penn State and Ohio State square off in a Top-10 battle as the Big Ten race continues to heat up.

Allar has taken a leap forward this year under new coordinator Andy Kotelnicki. Through seven games, he’s completed 71.3% of his passes for 1,640 yards and 12 touchdowns to help Penn State to a 7-0 record entering Week 10. Franklin said Allar’s performance is a reason he’ll be a game-time decision, but the staff will see how practice goes throughout the week to figure out if he can start.

“I think he’s played enough football for us that, that timeline will go all the way up to the game, really,” Franklin said. “I do think, from a practice perspective, no matter where we’re at on Tuesday, we’re going to have to get both of those guys reps Tuesday and Wednesday. But it’s too early to tell at this point.

“But [Drew’s] played enough football that I think that decision will go all the way up to game time. The reality is, we’re going to have to have both guys ready — and you could even make the argument all three guys ready, which is challenging to do in a game week.”
