Penn State quarterback Drew Allar is preparing for his first season as starting quarterback of the program. In preparation for his role next season, the Ohio native has been watching a ton of film on other quarterbacks to try and add to his game — some on college quarterbacks and a few in the NFL. And recently, during an interview on Next Up with Adam Breneman, Allar revealed which pro quarterbacks are his favorites to watch.

“Some of my personal favorites I watch are Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, Mahomes even,” said Allar. “For me, he’s hard to study just because of how freely he plays the game. He’s such a special player that it’s really hard to even like study him just because of how great he is. But like Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, (and) Mahomes.

“Getting into more, I like watching Jimmy G for footwork, at least. Just seeing what he did out in San Fran, like the fundamentals of footwork with them. But those three, Joe Burrow, Allen, and Mahomes, are probably my three favorites to watch.”

Like Allar, Burrow also hails from Ohio. But he made his name as an elite quarterback outside of his home state. Burrow put together arguably the best offensive season in college football history with the LSU Tigers, by collecting the Heisman Trophy and a national championship along the way before becoming the number one overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Allar also shares admiration for Caleb Williams, Drake Maye

When it comes to college quarterbacks, the list is a lot shorter for Allar. The Penn State quarterback enjoys watching the top two signal callers heading into the 2023 season.

Caleb Williams and Drake Maye are two of the best quarterbacks in college football right now,” said Allar. “I mean, they are just are different types of quarterbacks. I’ve been watching a lot more of Drake Maye just because I think my play style is more similar to him than mine is to Caleb Williams. So I’ve been trying to watch a little bit more of North Carolina film just to see what Drake does. But they’re both incredible talents. So I would probably say those two guys are like the guys I watch in college.”

Heading into the 2023 season, Williams is viewed as arguably the best player in college football. In some individuals’ minds, this is a highly debatable opinion because Maye proved himself last year to be an elite-level quarterback at the collegiate level.
