Penn State quarterback Drew Allar is getting his first opportunity as a full-time starting quarterback at the collegiate level. With last year’s starter Sean Clifford now in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers, it is Allar’s show to conduct.

The sophomore quarterback from Medina, OH, has a unique blend of mobility and passing ability to this game. That versatility he possesses has him ranked as the number 17 quarterback in college football, according to On3’s Industry Rankings.

And to try and live up to the expectations of his ranking, Allar watches some of the top quarterbacks in college football right now and has grown to admire the way they play the game.

Caleb Williams and Drake Maye are two of the best quarterbacks in college football right now,” said Allar. “I mean, they are just are different types of quarterbacks. I’ve been watching a lot more of Drake Maye just because I think my play style is more similar to him than mine is to Caleb Williams. So I’ve been trying to watch a little bit more of North Carolina film just to see what Drake does. But they’re both incredible talents. So I would probably say those two guys are like the guys I watch in college.”

Heading into the 2023 season, Williams is viewed as arguably the best player in college football. In some individuals’ minds, this is a highly debatable opinion because Maye proved himself last year to be an elite-level quarterback at the collegiate level.

For Allar, you can’t go wrong with either decision. But the Penn State quarterback does favor Maye because of the similarities in their playing style.

Allar explains why he didn’t commit to Ohio State

In an alternative timeline, Allar is the starting quarterback for the Ohio State Buckeyes. But in the current one we exist in, he is happily in Happy Valley as a member of the Penn State roster. And earlier in the interview, he explained his reason for not going to his home state’s powerhouse program and joining one of their biggest rivals.

“My biggest reason was I feel like Penn State was the right place for me to go,” said Allar. “It had everything that I wanted academically, obviously, football, and then off the field. Just the resources we have around here. And at the time like I was committed to Penn State for like nine months or something like that. And it was really late in the process.”
