Drew Allar is a competitor. That won’t change for Penn State sophomore quarterback even after his playing days are over.

On a recent interview on “Next Up with Adam Breneman,” Allar discussed his life after football. The answer was surprising coming from a soon-to-be Big Ten star.

“The biggest thing I’ll get into is coaching. If I had to say, I’d definitely want to coach in the NFL,” Allar said. “I’ve seen the schedule that Coach Franklin and all the coaches are on here. It’s constant, non-stop. I’m like I don’t know how you could do that.”

Preparing for the moment

Penn State fans are hoping the hard work pays off for Allar’s first season behind the steering wheel. Despite exiting high school as a five-star prospect and No. 3 quarterback in his class, Allar sat the bench his freshman season behind Penn State legend Sean Clifford.

It’s not a knock on Allar’s talents. Drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, Clifford is the Nittany Lions’ all-time leader in wins, passing yards, passing touchdowns and so much more. Now, it’s time for Allar to build his own legacy.

When the 6-foot-5 quarterback got a chance to get a head start on that legacy last season, he made the most of it. Allar appeared in 10 games in 2022, completing 35-of-60 passes for 344 yards and four touchdowns.

Big thinker

The Ohio native explained his reasoning behind wanting to coach in the NFL to Breneman.

“It’s a different game than college. It’s a lot more precision and like just going out and executing and game planning,” Allar said. “You can do a lot more things.”

The heady response is music to Penn State fans’ ears. Allar has all he needs to have a historic debut campaign at Penn State. NCAA.com ranked the Nittany Lions at No. 5 on its “way-too-early” top 25 list. On3’s own JD PicKell discussed Allar’s opportunity on a recent episode of “The Hard Count.”

“One of the top guys that has pressure on him to perform and elevate his team in 2023 is none other than Penn State’s quarterback Drew Allar,” PicKell said. “Five star kid coming out of high school, ton of buzz when he got State College. And the reason why there’s so much pressure on Drew Allar is because everything else at Penn State, all systems go.”

Allar won’t have to wait much longer to make his mark. Penn State will kick off its season on Sept. 2 against West Virginia.
