Micah Shrewsberry explains Jalen Pickett's drop in scoring
Jalen Pickett had a drop in scoring for Penn State recently, but head coach Micah Shrewsberry is not too concerned about his star player.
The Nittany Lions took down Northwestern 68-65 Wednesday night on the road for a much needed boost for the NCAA Tournament resume. Pickett had just seven points but dished out 11 assists.
Shrewsberry mentioned it was not always about the scoring for the star guard.
“The week before (During the game) against Illinois, (he scored 41),” Shrewsberry said. “Everybody’s focused on him. Everybody is trying to take away his scoring. But that’s the beauty of him is he’s not overdoing it, right? Some people could force it, if they’re taking the ball out of his hands. He’s just willing to make plays, right? He ends up with 11 assists and one turnover. He takes eight shots, he’s fourth on our team in shots and he’s got a chance to be an All-American this year with the way he’s playing. He’s a first-team all-league guard.
“(Jalen’s) got a chance to be an All-American and he’s okay with that. Right? I think if you would ask him, winning’s the most important thing and he trusts those guys on the team. If they want to put this much attention to me, I’m gonna spray it and I’m gonna get you guys involved and I trust you guys to make plays.”

Pickett finished the win with seven points, six rebounds and 11 assists. Camren Wynter led the team in scoring with 24 points, four rebounds and three assists as Penn State improved to 18-12 on the year.
“I’m trying to block all that out,” Pickett said in early February of building resumes for the NCAA Tournament. “Just the next game. I’m gonna go back and take a day off and just watch Ohio State. We’re trying to go 1-0 each day and we’re just gonna see where we are at the end … I think it was just time now where you gotta basically stop talking about it and start doing it.
“We’ve had a lot of mistakes that we’ve learned from and we’re just kind of correcting them now. We got to start putting that to use. Stop talking about what we’re going to do and just go out there and have fun, try and get back to having fun and winning games.”
