Sean Clifford led the Nittany Lions to a 45-17 win over Minnesota on Saturday, silencing his critics from one week ago after the loss to Michigan. The Penn State star posted his highest completion percentage (74%) of the season.

During his post-game press conference, head coach James Franklin refused to give a response to fans who started the game by booing the starting QB.

“No, I have no reaction to those types of things,” Franklin said. “As you guys know, I’m proud of Sean. He’s a battler and he’s resilient and he’s tough. And he played really well. I think if you look around the country, there’s a lot of programs that would be super excited and happy about Sean Clifford being the quarterback and what he was able to do tonight against one of the better defenses in the country, I’m proud of him.

“I’m not going to get into those other things but I’m proud of Sean and I love our whole quarterback room.”

Clifford completed 23-of-31 pass attempts for 295 yards and four passing touchdowns, plus an interception. The sixth-year senior quarterback was at the center of the bounce-back for Penn State.

Franklin praises Clifford, staff after 45-17 win

James Franklin watched his Nittany Lions dismantle Minnesota with a balanced offensive attack. They accumulated 304 passing yards and 175 rushing yards on Saturday. Clifford spread the ball around to eight different receivers and star running backs Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen both cracked the 75-yard mark.

“He’s just resilient,” Franklin said. “And he’s done it for a long time here. He’s battle-tested. And I’m proud of him. I love him. I’m proud of him. And his teammates have his back. So it’s great to see him come out and play well tonight.”

“I’m just proud of the entire staff, the players,” Franklin added. “To come out here and play a complete game. We started a little slow, especially on the offensive side of the ball. But overall, very, very pleased with how we played tonight.”

Penn State is now 6-1 with No. 2 Ohio State awaiting them on the other side of this week.
