Penn State basketball has gotten off to a hot start to the season, winning five straight including a blowout win over Virginia Tech. And coach Mike Rhoades is feeling it.

After a win over Purdue Fort Wayne, Rhoades turned promoter for a bit and urged the fans to pack the Bryce Jordan Center for the rest of the year.

“The last thing I’m going to say, I’m sorry I’m taking all this time. This is for everybody who shows up to games at the BJC,” Rhoades said. “The talk and what we used to say about the BJC and how quiet it is… I’m challenging all of you, the old Penn Staters to middle-aged Penn Staters like me and all the young ones, all the students, every one of us. Get out of your seat, get on your feet, sweat with us.”

There’s little doubt a proper homecourt advantage can go a long way, and Penn State could use it. The team went just 16-17 in Rhoades’ first season, but already things are looking up in 2024-25.

It’s not a chicken or the egg scenario, though.

Rhoades made it clear he thinks the Penn State fans showing up can help the team on the floor as much as the other way around, with results producing a more raucous environment.

“We don’t need popcorn at this game. Get your butts out of the seats. I will fight for you guys,” Rhoades said. “I want you sweating with everyone. We should never have the BJC quiet. I don’t care how big the BJC is. We’re not making any excuses around here. But I need you all.

“So if you come to the game, man, bring some Gatorade, some water, and sweat with us. Get into the game. For the older people like me and up, it’s a great day for exercise. In your seat, out of your seat, in your seat, out of your seat. Stand up. All right? It’s great for us.”

The second-year Penn State coach also issued a challenge to the younger portion of the fanbase.

“For all you young people, get crazy with it, and bring your friends with you all the time,” Rhoades said. “You’re not going to be in trouble for being an idiot for 40 minutes. I’ve got your back. But I want to build this program with all you guys and I want it to be a fun night in State College every time we play.”
