The Fighting Illini appeared to have the game wrapped up and in the bag late, holding a 89-82 lead with 37 seconds left in the game. However, a defensive rebound and 3-point shot two seconds later by guard Jameel Brown quickly changed the temperature in the arena and swung the momentum in the Nittany Lion’s favor. From there, the Penn State defense locked in, holding up their end of the bargain with a couple of stops to go along with a Puff Johnson layup to cut the lead to two.
Down by two with three seconds left on the clock, Penn State kicked the ball to Zach Hicks, who was inexplicably fouled while shooting a three-point shot. Hicks would go on to make all three of his free throws, giving the Nittany Lions a one-point lead in the closing seconds. Illinois had an opportunity to make a game-winning basket but failed to get a shot off before the end of regulation, resulting in a 90-89 victory for Penn State.
