The Penn State Nittany Lions are losing a young defensive lineman to the NCAA transfer portal following the end of spring practices. Defensive tackle Cole Brevard entered the portal on Monday, according to On3’s Matt Zenitz.

Brevard, a class of 2020 signee, spent the last two seasons at Penn State as a scout team contributor. He saw minimal game action with the Nittany Lions before ultimately opting to find a new home. He made his first career appearance in the Rutgers win but has a clean stat sheet.

The 6-foot-3, 332-pound tackle is a former four-star prospect. He left Carmel High in Carmel, Indiana, as the state’s No. 2 college football prospect and No. 384 overall in the country, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Brevard will be an intriguing prospect in the transfer portal for any team looking for a 330-plus-pound nose tackle with several years of eligibility remaining. He’ll be immediately eligible to play next season wherever he lands.

Brevard joins booming transfer portal

The NCAA Transfer Portal, which covers every NCAA sport at the Division I, II and III levels, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public.

The process of entering the portal goes through a school’s compliance office. Once a player provides written notification of an intent to transfer, the office enters the player’s name in the database. The compliance office has 48 hours to comply with the player’s request.

Once a player’s name shows up in the portal, other schools can contact the player. Players can change their minds at any point and withdraw from the portal. However, once a player enters the portal, the current scholarship is no longer valid. In other words, if a player enters the portal but decides to stay, the school does not have to reoffer a scholarship.
