Penn State hockey defeated Michigan on Friday night in an absolute thriller, coming away with a 6-5 win in overtime. The Nittany Lions had a between the legs shot by JJ Wiebusch to win it in the extra period. The freshman forward found the onions when PSU needed them the most, and he came away with an impressive highlight to finish off the Wolverines.

Wiebusch finished with three goals for Penn State. The Nittany Lions lost to No. 3 Minnesota last weekend.

PSU took the early lead in the first period. With 14:34 on the clock, Ben Schoen got a loose rebound in front of the net to shoot the puck past Michigan goalie Logan Stein. The Wolverines, however, responded with a goal of their own less than a minute later. Mark Estapa scored a goal to knot it up at 1-1 with the Wolverines first shot of the game.

The Nittany Lions managed to rachet up the heat midway through the second period, getting some shots from behind Michigan’s net. Stein lost his stick but still managed to stop every shot. In the third period, Michigan managed to tie the game up on a power play thanks to Will Horcoff. And the game continued to be back-and-forth for the rest of the third.

Penn State forward JJ Wiebusch managed to hit his hat trick in overtime, winning Game 1 of the series with his brilliant between-the-legs shot above. Up next, the Nittany Lions will stay in Ann Arbor for Game 2 of the series at 7:00 PM EST on Saturday.

Both of these teams are currently jockeying for NCAA Tournament positioning. The winner of the series will likely lock up at least an at-large bid. In their first series in November, which was a Michigan sweep, they combined for 27 goals, it was the most scoring in a two-game series for the Wolverines since 1986.
