Penn State offers Alabama 2024 5-star ATH commit Jaylen Mbakwe

Pinson (Ala.) Clay-Chalkville five-star athlete Jaylen Mbakwe received an offer from Penn State on Friday. It marked his second of the day, along with Colorado.

Mbakwe, who has been committed to Alabama since July 26, is the No. 14 overall prospect and No. 1 athlete in the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 1 player in Alabama. 

On3 rates Mbakwe higher than other recruiting services, according to the Industry Comparison. Even though he is rated as a four-star prospect in the 2024 On300, Mbakwe is the No. 6 overall prospect in the country.

The 5-foot-11, 170-pound recruit is one of five players in the Crimson Tide’s 2024 recruiting class. The others are Carlsbad (Calif.) four-star quarterback Julian Sayin, Foley (Ala.) four-star wide receiver Perry Thompson, Rome (Ga.) four-star tight end Martavious Collins and Mobile (Ala.) Mobile Christian School four-star linebacker Sterling Dixon.

Meanwhile, the Nittany Lions have two commitments in their 2024 recruiting class. They are Erie (Penn) McDowell four-star interior offensive lineman Cooper Cousins and Pittsburgh (Penn.) Central Catholic four-star linebacker Anthony Speca.

Mbakwe has an On3 NIL Valuation of $139K. The On3 NIL Valuation is the industry’s leading index that sets high school and college athletes’ projected annual value (PAV). The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.

“One of the more dynamic two-way athletes early on in the 2024 cycle. Stars on both sides of the ball for one of the top high school programs in Alabama. Has outstanding play speed, backed up by a personal best of 10.74 seconds in the 100 meters mid-way through his sophomore track season. Pulls away in the open field, easily out-running defenders. Dynamic with the ball in his hands both as a receiver and return man. Also shows the ability to separate on vertical routes. Returned several kicks for touchdowns.

“Also doubles as a productive defensive back, with high level ball production, totaling 4 interceptions and 12 pass breakups as a sophomore. Should he end up at defensive back, will need to continue honing his technical skills. Projects as one of the more electric athletes in the 2024 cycle.”
