WATCH: Penn State QB commit Drew Allar drops dime for TD pass
It’s been some time since Penn State had an elite quarterback—no, Christian Hackenberg doesn’t count. But the Nittany Lions have their quarterback of the future coming to campus in 2022 with four-star signal-caller Drew Allar.
Allar, the No. 21 prospect in the 2022 On300 rankings, is the top-ranked quarterback in the country and sits just one spot outside five-star status. There’s a reason why. The Medina (Ohio) High quarterback possesses a very strong arm and excellent touch for someone who hasn’t been playing quarterback his entire life. Both of those traits were again on display Friday night.
In the second quarter of Medina’s game against rival Mentor, Allar laced a perfectly thrown ball to the corner of the end zone for his receiver, Brennen Schramm. The result was an 18-yard touchdown pass, the second of the half for Allar, who also rushed for a 1-yard score in the first score.
The 6-foot-5, 228-pound Allar has all the attributes of a major conference college quarterback, and that’s exactly what the Nittany Lions are looking for.
Drew Allar is a complete quarterback
Although he’s ranked lower by other industry publications, Allar has drawn the eye of On3 Director of Scouting Charles Power, who ranks him as the No. 1 quarterback in the class.

“We’ve seen Allar get increasingly more comfortable as the season has progressed,” Power said recently. “He’s been rolling in recent weeks. The Penn State quarterback pledge has continued to show his strong, downfield arm. He’s able to flick the ball around and touch all areas of the field. The arm talent continues to look like it’s among the best in the class.”
Allar has proven that out through the beginning of his senior season, completing 61 percent of his passes while throwing 1,737 yards, 17 touchdowns and just two interceptions through five games.
With senior quarterback Sean Clifford likely graduating and moving on after this season, Penn State should have an intense quarterback competition this spring. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Allar running out with the offense when the Nittany Lions open the 2022 season at Purdue.
