Penn State QB Drew Allar will return to school in 2025 for senior year
Penn State QB Drew Allar will return to school in 2025, rather than declaring for the NFL Draft, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
“Sources: Penn State star quarterback Drew Allar has informed the school’s coaching staff of his intention to return to school for his senior year in 2025,” Thamel wrote on Twitter. “Allar is 21-5 as a Penn State starter and would loom as one of the faces of college football in 2025.
“Allar has thrown for 5,869 yards and 50 touchdowns in his Penn State career. This year, he’s led Penn State to the Big Ten title game and a No. 6 seed in the College Football Playoff, as the Nittany Lions will host No. 11 SMU in the first round of the CFP on Dec. 21.”
Allar was projected among the QBs ready to go into the 2025 NFL Draft. But with Beau Pribula entering the transfer portal, the depth was even thinner for Penn State.
So, Allar is ready to run it back for one more season with the Nittany Lions.
As a member of the Class of 2022, Allar was a five-star recruit out of Medina (Ohio) High, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 3 overall prospect in the state, the No. 3 quarterback in the class and the No. 28 overall prospect in the class.

Allar will be back next season, but the attention is still solely on SMU in the College Football Playoff first round this week.

“I think in the locker room, again, because the season isn’t over, I think it was handled pretty well,” head coach James Franklin said after the Big Ten Championship loss. “Obviously, there were still some hurt feelings and raw emotions, but overall, I think guys get it and understand that we’ve got a ton of football left in front of us as long as we handle it the right way. I think our leadership will step up big time.”
For Penn State, this is the program’s first time making it to the College Football Playoff. It comes in the same year that the field expanded to 12 teams from four. Despite that, the Nittany Lions didn’t have a watch party to see where they ended up.
“But it’s not like we had a watch party or anything like that,” Franklin said. “It was a long night and a physical night, so guys, we want them to get rested and recovered. We were pretty confident that we were going to be in the Playoff. It’s just where we were going to be.”
Penn State will host the SMU Mustangs at Beaver Stadium at 12:00 p.m. EST on December 21st.
