Penn State trending to flip 4-star Duke LB commit Cam Smith
Salem (N.J.) St. Joseph’s Prep four-star linebacker Cam Smith has been committed to the Duke Blue Devils since Feb. 8.
Following expert predictions from On3 Director of Recruiting Chad Simmons and VP of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong, Penn State is now trending to flip Smith away from the Blue Devils. According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, the Nittany Lions now have a 95.6% chance of landing Smith’s commitment.
Smith has visited State College multiple times, most recently at the end of last month for Penn State’s July recruiting weekend.
“Me and my family liked talking to the coaches and hearing about what they had to offer,” Smith told On3. “The area was also beautiful. I talked to Alex Tatsch a bit during the event.”

Smith said that communication with Penn State has been picking up recently.
“Yes, we’ve been talking a lot recently,” Smith said. “I feel like things are progressing well and they seem eager to try to bring me on board. They’ve said things such as needing a guy like me and being excited about our process.”
Penn State head coach James Franklin had a message for Smith in their one-on-one meeting.
“After space opened up in the linebacker room, I was the first guy they wanted to get in contact with and explain how the situation changed. Now that a spot’s open, they want me to be the guy,” Smith said.
Smith is the nation’s No. 264 overall prospect, No. 26 linebacker and No. 8 recruit from Pennsylvania in the 2025 cycle according to the On3 Industry Ranking — a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
