Texas A&M transfer OL TJ Shanahan commits to Penn State
Former Texas A&M offensive lineman TJ Shanahan has committed to Penn State, via the NCAA Transfer Portal, per On3’s Hayes Fawcett. He spent two seasons with the Aggies.
Shanahan made 10 appearances for Texas A&M this season, including five starts. The 6-foot-4 redshirt freshman might have recorded even more starts if he hadn’t suffered an injury this season that kept him sidelined for two weeks.
In his true freshman season in 2023, Shanahan played in three games but ultimately redshirted. Shanahan will have three years of eligibility remaining.
TJ Shanahan played high school football at Westlake (FL), where he was a four-star recruit. He was the No. 170 overall player and No. 11 interior offensive lineman in the 2023 recruiting cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
Missouri also attempted to recruit Shanahan out of the transfer portal. Shanahan was the No. 37 interior offensive lineman to enter the portal this offseason, according to On3’s 2025 Transfer Portal Player Rankings.
He is the fourth player Penn State has added via the transfer portal this offseason. The Nittany Lions have also lost five players to the portal, landing them at No. 37 in On3’s 2025 Team Transfer Portal Rankings.
Shanahan will only add to an already strong Penn State offensive line. The Nittany Lions only allowed 1.25 sacks per game this season, ranking 23rd in the country. Nonetheless, the team won’t be satisfied entering this offseason after coming so close to reaching the national championship.

After falling to Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff semifinals on Thursday, Penn State finished its season with a 13-3 record. The Nittany Lions’ only other losses this season were against Oregon and Ohio State.
Now, Penn State head coach James Franklin will look to make the offseason changes necessary for his program to compete for the national title again in 2025. Of course, he won’t be the only one.
The transfer portal officially opened on Dec. 7 and closed on Dec. 28, though players on teams still playing in the postseason will get an additional five-day window to enter the portal after their seasons end.
