Pitt basketball announces freshman Dior Johnson no longer attending school
Dior Johnson is no longer with the Pittsburgh basketball team or on campus, the school announced in a statement.
“Johnson had been kicked off campus after an alleged domestic violence incident, then was reinstated and went the team on their recent trip to Spain,” Jeff Goodman wrote on Twitter. “Told there was no other recent incident that occurred, per source.”
Johnson was entering his redshirt freshman season at Pitt. He was a four-star recruit in the 2020 recruiting cycle, according to On3 Industry Ratings. Additionally, he was the No. 50 player in his class. Johnson was the highest-rated signee under head coach Jeff Capel and the highest-rated signee at Pitt since Steven Adams in 2012.
Dior Johnson’s past issues with program
This isn’t the first time Johnson has run into trouble while with the program. Johnson was arrested on Sept. 6, 2022, for allegedly assaulting a woman. He was charged with a number of crimes along with the aforementioned aggravated assault charge.
Johnson was able to plead down the charges to a pair of misdemeanors and ultimately received a year on probation. While Pitt has not yet publicized the details of Johnson’s alleged domestic violence incident, this is the history behind his arrest in September 2022.
Johnson was charged with aggravated and simple assault, unlawful restraint, false imprisonment and strangulation, WTAE reported last year. Johnson allegedly slapped a woman across the face with “full force” in the late hours of Sept. 5 and early morning of Sept. 6 after he became angry she got him and his phone wet. He then took the woman’s phone before returning around 4 a.m. to return it, according to a complaint WTAE obtained.

Then, a verbal argument began at 8:30 a.m. before Johnson allegedly “got violent and repeatedly punched (the woman) in her arms, stomach, and head multiple times,” according to the complaint.
Following the incident, Pitt released a statement announcing Johnson was suspended indefinitely as a result of the situation.
“University of Pittsburgh men’s basketball student-athlete Dior Johnson has been indefinitely suspended from all team activities pending the resolution of legal charges filed against him,” the statement read. “The Pitt Athletic Department, which became aware of the charges Friday afternoon, will decline further comment until the legal process has reached a resolution.”
Now, less than a year since the initial incident, Johnson is no longer at the school. Pitt finished last season with a 24-12 overall record and 14-6 mark in conference play.
