On Friday Pittsburgh announced the hiring of Tennessee Senior Deputy AD/Chief Operating Officer Allen Greene as the school’s new athletic director. Who along with spending time at Tennessee was previously the AD at Auburn and Buffalo.

Greene will take over the reins of the Pitt athletic department for Heather Lyke, who was fired in September after serving as the athletic director for seven years. A departure attributed to Lyke’s friction with school chancellor Joan Gabel as the Panthers sought out a new AD that could specialize in increasing revenue.

“In Allen Greene, we have a proven national leader who exemplifies the Pitt way, and who has all of the experience and intangibles to elevate our athletics program in competition and in the classroom,” Gabel said in a statement. “In my conversations with Allen and with many others who know him well, it is clear that he will lead us successfully into the new world of intercollegiate athletics.”

On top of his experience, Greene brings expertise in football, finances, NIL, and fundraising with him to Pittsburgh. Spending three years as the athletic director at Buffalo before spending five years in the same role at Auburn. Where the Tigers won eight conference championships and had 44 programs finish in the top 25 nationally, including 17 teams in the top 10, before stepping away from the role in August of 2022.

Since his exit from The Plains, Greene has spent time at Ole Miss and Tennessee. Playing a role in both programs being at the forefront of adapting to the recent changes in college sports such as the use of NIL and the transfer portal. Highlighted by both respective football teams using the portal and NIL to their advantage in building two of the best rosters currently in the sport.

Greene will look to usher Pitt into a new era of athletics as the college sports landscape continues to evolve. Taking over a program rich in history that currently has 19 varsity teams and one of just five current NCAA Division I schools with multiple national championships in both football and men’s basketball.
